In a significant development for Somalia’s diplomatic representation, Permanent Representative to the United Nations has taken on the role of Chair of the African Group at the United Nations for the month of June, 2023.
The African Group, composed of the 54 African Union Member States, serves as a regional grouping within the United Nations, facilitating collaboration and representation on matters of common interest.
”Building on the great work of my predecessor, i will strive to strengthen African unity and solidarity as we forge ahead together to promote and defend the core interest of the African Group in New York.” Ambassador Osman said.
Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman’s appointment as Chair of the African Group reflects the recognition of Somalia’s growing influence and commitment to regional and global affairs. It also underscores the country’s progress in strengthening its diplomatic ties and engaging actively in multilateral forums.
According to diplomats, Osman’s appointment on Thursday is expected to enhance Somalia’s representation within the African Group and further advance the interests of the African Union Member States.
As the Chair of the African Group, he will play a pivotal role in promoting African interests, fostering dialogue and coordinating joint initiatives at the United Nations.
The African Group holds great significance within the United Nations system, providing a platform for African nations to articulate their perspectives and concerns on various global issues.
With the diversity and complexity of challenges facing the African continent, including peace and security, sustainable development and climate change, the African Group’s leadership assumes a crucial role in advocating for African interests on the international stage.
In assuming this leadership role, Mr. Osman will face a range of pressing issues including advancing African Union’s Agenda 2063, an ambitious blueprint for transforming Africa’s socio-economic landscape, and spearheading efforts to address regional conflicts and promote peace and stability across the continent.
As Chair of the African Group, Osman will also work closely with other regional groups, international organizations and the United Nations Secretariat to foster greater cooperation and coordination in addressing global challenges.
The assumption of the chairmanship by Somalia marks an important milestone for both Somalia and the African Group and demonstrates Somalia’s commitment to playing an active role on the international stage.
